Driving Directions

Using Google Earth to obtain driving directions.

You can view the results of your SuperMed Network 'Find Provider' search using the Google Earth 3D viewer. The viewer is a free download at this site

If you choose this option, you will be asked to either Save or Open a file. The file contains Keyhole Markup Language, which is used by the Google Earth viewer. If you choose Open, the file will automatically launch Google Earth. If you save the file to a location on your PC's hard drive, you will be able to view it again, without having to use the SuperMed Network site. When you double-click on the file name, it will launch Google Earth.

Using Google Earth

When Google Earth opens, you will see your Center Point, or point of origin, as an icon that looks like a push pin. Each of the providers meeting your criteria will appear as a small black and white bulls-eye. There will also be a set of four concentric circles that represent 5, 10, 25 and 50 miles from center.

All of the usual Google Earth controls are available to you. The complete user manual for Google Earth can be found here

Choosing start and end points

Right-click (CTRL click on the Mac) on the push-pin to open the pop-up menu. From this menu, select 'Directions from this'. Then right-click (CTRL click on the Mac) on one of the bullseye icons and select 'Directions to this' from the pop-up menu.

Previewing the route

Once you have chosen both a start and end point, the Search panel automatically transfers the information to the Directions tab. The route and turn-by-turn directions appear in the search listings window.

Note the arrow button that appears near the bottom of the left pane where the 'Play Tour' label appears. If you click this button, Google Earth will 'fly over' your selected route, enabling you to envision the driving before you even get in your car.

A hard-copy of the directions

In the image to the right, note the words 'Printable view' on the left side of the screen shot. Click this link for a printer-friendly set of driving directions that you can take with you.

When you click 'Printable view', Google Earth will launch a new browser window with the same route displayed using Google Maps.

Google Maps

When you are viewing the route in Google Maps, simply click the 'Print' link that appears directly above the map. This will send both the directions and the map to your printer.
